We are sure you sometimes take your kids to a playroom – on occasion of someone's birthday or just to let them play with peers in a new place. Are you sure that your youngster is totally safe in such a place? This is the basic question that is worth asking each time you leave your children with an animator in a playroom or when you just stop observing them to drink coffee at one of the tables prepared for parents.
In 2014 Office of Competition and Consumer Protection together with the Commercial Inspection and in agreement with the Ombudsman for Children controlled playrooms in various places in Poland. They controlled 48 playrooms then, revising as well 82 terms and conditions in these places. What did they find out? In as many as 75% of the visited playrooms the owner does not take responsibility for any damages to a person, which means that the staff is not liable if children have any accidents during their play. What is more, almost half of the controlled spots do not present such document to their clients, pleading on the rule that buying a ticket implies acceptance of the terms and conditions.
Although one could somehow turn a blind eye to these regulations, it is worrying that in more than 25% of rooms toys and devices could pose a danger to children. Their technical condition could result in an injury and could even be dangerous for kids' life. How can a place be regarded as safe if there are sharp edges or hard protruding elements in such a room? Apart from that there were also unsecured sockets, pieces of equipment in which a child's head could be trapped or even spots where a kid could leave a playroom unnoticed.
Actually, the answer to this question has been implied in the previous paragraph. A safe playroom is first and foremost a place where people managing such an area are responsible for safety. Then their struggle to provide little ones with proper conditions for playing will be much more intensive. As far as guardianship is concerned, it is worth checking if personnel has the right qualifications, what are the guardians duties and if they do not take care of too many children. What are the requirements for equipment? Definitely equipment used by children cannot have any sharp edges or protruding elements, as it has been mentioned before. Besides, the floor should be covered with proper material which will have a cushioning effect in case a child falls, especially from the highest spots in such a playroom. In case of the youngest children it is worth paying attention to the quality of moving elements – blocks and other toys. After all, we know that children like putting them in their mouths or even trying to bite them. Such objects should have adequate certificates confirming their safety for young children and ought to be regularly cleaned. A playroom is a place full of bacteria, but not all of them come from people – some are transferred on the objects touched by everyone.
